I subscribed DirecTV about a year ago. I have been on an extended vacation in Australia since Feb. this year, and will not be returning to the States until at least January or Feb. of 2007. I have been emailing DirecTV requesting to discontinue all of my services with DirecTV repeatedly, and all I got was emails telling me that there are "guidelines" that needed to follow, and that a representative would call me and discuss the issues with me. I gave them my telephone number (and postal address) here in Australia, but nobody ever contacted me. Who should I complain to about this???

Why don't you just call them to cancel? You should know that they aren't going to accept an email as valid proof that the account owner wishes to cancel the account. It isn't fool-proof, but at least on the phone they can verify you are the account owner. Granted it also gives them a chance to try to hold on to you, but they'll be happy if you just request to suspend your service until you come back stateside. Just make the long distance phone call and be done with it.

As far as I am aware, you can't terminate service (or suspend service), via email communication. Only via phone.

And given that DirecTV doesn't service Austrailia, is is "very" possible, that their phone systems blocks any international calls.... that are outside their own phone network.

I know our phone system here at work won't let us call outside the US, until they adjusted some things to allow us to call Canada

It's very likely their 800 numbers will not accept a call from outside the US and unfortunate that they don't publish any local numbers on their web site or haven't given you a non-800 number to call in your email correspondences. Email them again and ask for a non-800 number you can call.

I agree, get on the phone and try to make contact with customer service. There must be a way to call the U.S. from Australia, even if it isn't toll-free.

If you have some proof, (i.e. a travel itinerary, lodging statements, etc), then you will probably be in good shape getting credited for the amounts you already paid. The amounts may come off future bills, but it's better than what you have right now.

Some people write as if D* is some evil empire, but they are going to want to keep your patronage once you return to the U.S.

In your e-mails with them, have you asked them how to get in touch with them by phone and whether you would be able to get through on their regular 800 number? It would surprise me, even if they are able - which they may not be - that they would call you in Australia. I think you would need to initiate phone contact if there is a number you could call and get through on.

If you have a relative you trust in the US, then have them call on your behalf. Or fax customer service @# 1(256)922-4081. Or you can mail an official letter which is acceptable.

If I understand skype correctly you get free calls. When the call is received is it presented as coming from a US number? I'm not talking about caller id, what I'm referring to is the fact that toll free numbers that are only available for the US will simply not accept a non-US call. Now, if using skype you in effect use a phone number from Ohio, then that should work.

From what I've read that isn't necessarily the case. But it is worth a try. Now since Henry the Great hasn't responded to any of these posts, I'd guess all of our discussions are moot.

The fax number I provided works... Use your scanner and fax modem on your pc to fax a formal letter with your signature.
