(I'm a Comcast refugee and brand new to considering a satellite - this is the first of what are probably some really basic questions)

Why would you use a DirectTV reseller instead of dealing directly with DirectTV themselves?

I personally wouldn't. There may be advantages dealing with a local vendor, service primarily. I never had the need to call a local dealer although many here have had to due to the fact that the sub contractor D* used in their area was not skilled enough to hander the installation.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Why use a reseller?

The only resons I can think of are:

Impulse buying: Vendor has a booth etc, at the mall, and the wavering customer decides then and there to go with sat service.

Keeping $$ local: Signs up with the local mom and pop video service with the D* newspaper or print add to keep them in business by keeping the $$ local.

Service reputation: Local vendor has a great service record in their respective market. Friends or neighbors talk about what a great ontime no hassle installation they had done at their home.

Promised a "great deal" on free programming during the personal (not to an 800 number from ????) phone call to a local number. Liked the sound of that compared to cold calling D* and playing CSR roulette.

Four quick ones I could come up with but I just called the 800 number at the time I had my initial install completed.

Like you I did the research online, for programming, pricing, and hardware requirements and/or availability before I took the plunge.

Why?

Hmmm.. Faster Service.. Same Deals.. Keeping your money locally. No dealing with 800 numbers. And in most cases, you get as in my case, someone that has been doing this for 25 years, instead of someone that was flipping hamburgers yesterday.. (yes I know there are some DTV techs that have been around longer). But around here most techs are new to the business..

Thanks for the replies and welcomes, folks!

A follow-up: how does one go about finding who the good local resellers are? Would it be acceptable to post in this section of the forum asking for folks who had good experiences in the Philadelphia area?

I used a reseller when I had my latest HD system installed because I liked their installations. The folks that DirecTV sent, I didn't care for their work. It cost me an extra $79, which I viewed mostly as a gas/mileage charge as they had to come from further away, but I got the same deal on the DVR, dish and installation. I also have somebody local to call if I have problems. That, to me, is worth a lot, more than any protection plan.

You can always check your yellow pages for names. I knew mine because they had done other installations for me.

I can't think of any reason other than possibly quicker response to a service call. Other than that, I would contact D* directly if I were a new customer or had other questions.
