Here is an intriguing (yet minor in the scheme of things) problem I have found with my HR20:

On Fridays at 8, I have 3 series links: Vanished (3 prioritizer), 1 vs 100 (25), and Doctor Who (29).

On Fridays at 9, I have 3 series links: Las Vegas (26 prioritizer), Trading Spouses (27) and Battlestar Galactica (28).

My To Do list correctly lists Vanished and 1vs 100 at 8pm and Las Vegas and Trading Spouses at 9 pm.

Doctor Who and Battlestar Gallactica are both listed as conflict at their original times. However, the Sci-fi network re-airs Doctor WHo at 10:00 and Battlestar Galactica at 11:00. The HR20 automatically schedules Battlestar Galactica to record at 11:00 as the season record, but does not automatically schedule Doctor Who at 10:00. However, if I hit the R button, Doctor Who will record, just not as a series link. Both are series recordings scheduled for first-run only, both on the same network, one right after the other.

Any idea why one would automatically adjust for a replay of one show and not the other?

Okay, once again Guide glitches cause trouble!

Remember, everything about the HR20 scheduling revolves around the Guide. If, as I strongly suspect, there's metadata in the Guide that's not displayed to the user, how the HR20 interprets and implements its programming will be affected by that metadata. If that data says (incorrectly) that the program extends beyond its programmed timeslot, bingo. Conflict where there shouldn't be one. If it instructs the HR20 that the program has "expired" and should be deleted, bingo. Another "mystery deletion". If it says the program is a first-run (e.g., some hypothetical "repeat" flag isn't set properly), bingo. No recording. Etc, etc, etc.

I think a LOT of the glitches we see in some markets has to do with the guide data and how it's interpreted by the HR20, along with other "mystery bits" in the data stream related to copy-protection and so forth. Until D* irons out all this stuff, you'll see people having lots of weird, random and hard-to-replicate glitches.

Not as quick to condem D as Lefty since they don't control the guide info. What deos the info for Dr. Who say? Is there a chance that since it is a repeat of the earlier show it is listed as repeat? If so, do you have your series to record first runs only. How about deleting the series and recreating it at the top of the priority list. How about setting the series from within the guide at the 10:00 slot?

Hope something I said helps.

I've had this issue with South Park. I have 2 other shows Weds at 10, but the new SP is always played at midnight that night, but it would never record that one. I just set up a manual recording for the midnight one.

Both series links are first run only, so that isn't it.

Neither Dr. Who or BSG identify the second airing as a repeat.

Another wierd thing is happening...For this coming Friday, neither show is set to record at 8:00 (DW), 9:00 (BSG), 10:00 (DW), 11:00 (BSG). Right now, BSG is set to record BSG the following Tuesday.(November 14). I forgot that it did the same thing last week, then later canceled the Tuesday recording and moved up to the Friday recording instead.

I think the scheduler for series links when the third program re-airs a first run episode is really messed up. Hopefully they will work on that for one of these updates. It isn't a major problem for me, but it definitely could make life easier if they fix it!

Just another idea: Have you padded the record times on any of the 8:00pm shows to stretch 1 or 2 minutes into the 9:00pm shows? If so I wonder how the HR20 would deal with the fact that it still needs to record 2 more minutes of the 8:00pm shows and now you are asking it to record 2 more 9:00pm shows. Just a thought. If someone knows the answer then I'd be interested to know.

It can't. I posted my experience last night here:

http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=68699

I forgot that I had padded my two shows at the end for 2 mins. each. It was giving me the X*. But as long as he is watching one of the channels he is recording and not tuned to a different cannel it should be ok.

YIKES! There's something that I can easily see myself doing and then ending up not understanding why it didn't record. I'll have to remember to go into my series links and remove the padding I entered on a few. I haven't been caught with this yet, probably because the shows I like aren't one after another. I also frequently watch/tape shows on Discovery & History Channels so I go out of my way to tape it out of the primetime slots since they replay the primetime shows again at 11:00pm.

Didn't pad either show. I can record the 10:00 show by hitting R, so it isn't a matter of not enough room or anything.

Sometimes these shows have longer than 60 min run times on the guide; or start and are listed at 9:01 to 10:00 and run 59 min. This might have an effect on recordings of series links. Maybe by the time you hit the R, the minute elapsed and you're able to record it.

Thats not it in this case. First, I can hit R right now for next Friday's 10 pm airing. Second, neither of the 9:00 shows don't go into the next hour. Third, I have no season series set for 10:00 friday, so there would still be time left, unless both my other 9:00 shows went long (which they don't)

OK. I tried. Sorry I couldn't help you.

If you find the answer, please be sure to post it.

Thanks

I had an interesting experience Fri night. I came home after being out of town and had a LOT of "partial" recordings. My HISTORY showed that Dr Who recorded, but when I highlited it and hit Select, it showed info for Battlestar! I tried playing, but it was a corrupt recording. :( Strange that history thought it was one thing but the detail showed it was another.

I don't know why it is doing that. But why don't you just cancel the Dr. Who series link. Then reschedule a series link for it in the 10:00pm time slot? That should work.

I understand that I could hit the record buttone twice in the guide at the 10:00 slot, but why would that help...in the following weeks, would it not just find the 8:00 show and report a conflict like it does now? I did not think you can set a series link for a show in a specific time slot. Although I don't expect that to solve the problem, I am open minded enough to try it and see what happens.

I just turned on the tv...didn't do anything yet to try to fix the series link, but lo and behold, Dr. Who and BSG were both set to record at 10:00 and 11:00 the way they should! I don't know why, but hopefully, DTV figured out something was wrong with the scheduling and fixed it!!!!!!:)

The bottom line is...why doesn't the HR-10 have these issues/problems???????
Tivos have that logic that won't let it record a show if had already recorded the same episode in the last 28 days. I think that covers up a lot of potential guide data logic issues.

Who actually creates the Guide data? If it is the channel company then it could be that they are either doing something wrong or that the equipment they use is at fault.
