Need help! - have a Toshiba DLP (model 62MX196), hooked up to HR20. Have tried with native on & off, yet it takes a good 4-5 seconds to move from channel to channel....any suggestions would be helpful as this is quite frustrating

ps - i am connected via HDMI cable & primary set to 1080 pillar box

thanks!

If you're talking about moving channel to channel in the guide, I'd try the reset button. If you're talking changing channels and native mode is off, I'd try removing HDMI and using component and if that doesn't working doing the reset.

I have a delay (3-4 seconds) also when changing channels using the up & dn channel buttons. I have native off with 720p resolution and have tried with HDMI, Component and even S-Video, all resolutions selected, resets, etc. Does not matter which channels I am going to/from so I had assumed this is "normal". What delay do other users see? I am currently connected via HDMI to a Westinghouse 46W1 and I have no HDMI issues.

3-4 seconds doesn't sound that uncommon to me... Isn't that the case with all digital TV services? I recently switched from Dish (where I was only using their SD service) and it always took a few seconds to switch between channels.

I've noticed the same thing with the HR20. I noticed then when I channel up about 3-4 times in a row, the channel banner (set on 4 second display) will be gone by the time it actually gets to the channel and displays the picture. Then, I have to hit the Info button to find out what the show is.

As far as it being normal, I don't know. None of my previous boxes (3 SD and 2 HD) have ever taken this long while using channel +/-.

Any DVR based receiver is going to have some type of delay changing channels because it needs to flush the buffer and begin recording the new channel. If you starting flipping quickly you can certainly incur some delays because of it. I'd say 2-3 seconds is more then normal. I have the same thing on my Tivo based units.

If you have native resolution set to "on" you will get more dealy as it cycles the resolutions to find one your TV likes plus your TV then needs to lock on to it. The amount of this delay is effected by your connection (component vs. HDMI) and how good your TV is with change in resolution. By leaving it off the only delay you get is the normal "DVR type delay".

FYI you can set the banner to go away quicker in the setup menu. I have mine set to 2 seconds.

Well, if that's normal, than I'll just put up with it, I guess. I have Native Off, so I guess I just think it's a long delay. My stand-alone Tivo didn't lag behind like this either. The channel changing on my Tivo took maybe a half second longer and I've always assumed that was because it had to send the channel switch to the DTV box. Even though it was a little slower in channel changing, it wasn't lagging behind like the HR20 does.

The lagging behind is bad enough that it's forcing me to use the guide to see what's on rather then channel up through the HD channels to view what's on. I guess you could call that my work-around.

You might try the mini guide. Press the blue button when on a channel and it brings up a one line guide. This shows whats on the other channels but leaves the picture in full screen.

I'd say my channel changes aren't more then a couple seconds. But then I've had DirecTivo's for years and am used to the "DVR delay" so I don't even notice it. DVR's aren't really made for channel surfing so they won't be optomized for that. But the HR20 (and HR15) brings a bit more of that "live surfing" mentality and features such as the mini-guide and favorites lists that the Tivo didn't have.

I've been using the mini-guide for years through Dish and I was VERY happy to see that same feature on the HR20 and R15 I just got.

Agree, DVR's aren't meant for "channel surfing". I wouldn't say the delay in channel changing on DTV is any longer or shorter then with Dish or many cable and IPTV solutions I've used. Welcome to the world of digital TV! :)

Not sure what this response meant by "noticible".

I got my HR20 all hooked up last night. I first tried turning the "NATIVE" : ON but that was way to slow for me (and my wife). I turned it OFF and went back to DISPLAY set up. Made sure that all 4 resolutions were identified as available for my TV (they weren't so I added some). I now have 1080i pillar set as default but you can change on the fly with the FORMAT button on the remote. Now there's NO noticeable delay from channel to channel even when switching from SD to HD

My DVR40 was at least twice as fast when changing channels. It wouldn't be so bad if the Info at the top updated quickly. When you change channels this is what I see.

Info bar comes up immeadiately.
0-1 second - channel # and Logo changes
1-2 seconds - program description changes
3-4 seconds - video and audio appears.

I do use the mini guide but my wife just like to change channels. Anyone want to tell her it can't be done faster? I can tell you her response!

That's probably a better way to describe it. It's like pressing the channel up a few times and the banner ends up not displaying for the channel I stopped on and 3-4 seconds later I get a picture with audio, but have no idea what channel or program I'm viewing.

In fact, thinking about this...I've had it where the last thing I see on the banner is channel 74, but I stopped on 75 and as soon as the video and audio come through, I'll be watching 75, but the banner has already disappeared. It's not just the picture that is lagging behind.

I'll switch from 72 to 78 and the banner disappears before the info in the banner has made it's way to the current channel's correct info. The banner disappears before it caught up to the channel I stopped on.

I was just playing with it. Try this and tell me if you get the same result...

Tune into 79. Channel down to 78 and immediately go back to 79. The last thing my banner shows is the info for 78, but in about 4 seconds, the picture and audio come up on channel 79. So it looks like I'm watching Raging Bull by the banner, but the program that displays is Get Out!

It doesn't happen everytime, but often enough that I get confused as to what I'm watching.
