My wife decided to rearrange some furniture and ended up knocking the HR20 on the ground. It landed on the corner where the power cord plugs into the box. It broke off the power input and its loose inside the HR20. Are there any repair options? Can i send it to Directv and pay to have it fixed, or will I just have to buy a new receiver?

You have two options assuming your receiver is leased.

1. Set aside $72 which is the cost of a year subscription to the Protection Plan (the minimum you can subscribe). It costs $5.99/month. Unfortunately, you have to wait 30 days after subscribing before you can use it so you'll be without your receiver for a month. On the BRIGHT side, your 2-year programming commitment won't be extended back to 2 years AND for the next year you don't have to worry about anything getting broken or giving trouble (including the dish). In fact, you won't have to do anything because DirecTV sends out a technician for problems.

2. DirecTV will replace your receiver for a $20 S & H fee BUT using this service will extend your programming commitment back to 2 years.

The sticky issue here is that the receiver didn't just break down, it was broken. Since the Protection Plan is really an insurance policy (actually administered by an insurance company!), I'm sure it will cover your repair because they even come right out and say they will cover damage caused by a voltage spike among other things. But you may have to pay more than the $20 if you choose option #2. You will have to call DirecTV and explain the situation to find out.

Unless his HR20 was owned it won't come with a new commitment. Leased IRD's that are replaced with leased IRD's don't reset the commitment. If he had the Protection Plan it would save him the $20 too.

Looks like the protection plan specifically excludes damage from accidents and abuse. Anyone have any problems getting equipment replaced that was broken due to boo-boos like this?
If they do, just call and express your dissatisfaction over it. They will likely waive it or at least offer some freebies to help offset it.

Best answer yet. Never have had a problem getting a receiver replaced thru the PP. Once they send you a replacement, all they care about is getting the old one back. I have actually received a replacement 20-100 that had a faulty power receptacle on it. And it said, quite clearly on the tape on the back of the box "refurbished". How do you "refurbish" anything electrical and still have a faulty receptacle on the back? The plug just kept falling out. I have had no luck with 20-100s.
