All the outputs of my WB68 are in use and I want to add a receiver to a different room. Will D* exchange the WB68 for a WB616 or will they add an extra WB68 by using splitters? If they use splitters would I also need a polarity locker?

Yes they will.

If I knew for a fact that D* will give me this $250 switch, I would at some point add a HD receiver from Wal-Mart to my system.

You are saying you know people to whom D* has given the WB616?

If you have previous receivers installed, and an additional receiver is going to make it the 5th, 6th, 7th, ect connection to the dish....then the installer HAS to bring the right equipment to make it all work together.

If they don't, then it is considered an incorrect or incomplete install, and you can complain to CIS: Customer Installation Support at 1-888-355-7530, because it is one of their job functions to get wrong installs fixed.

Good luck.

I don't think DirecTV is "giving" the more expensive WB616

Quality installers will try to cascade the switches, or use the splitter method.

There have been people who have reported that they purchased the WB616, and then DirecTV credited them the difference.

A polarity locker is most definently recommend if you are using the splitter method with the WB68's

I have 8 connections right now to a D*-provided Zinwell WB68, but those switches sell for less than $100.

The WB616, necessary for more than 8 connections in a Ku/Ka system, is about $379 and I would say they are pretty rare.

Problem is, as I understand it, cascading will work right now on Ku birds, and a lot of people will be wondering later why they can't get the new Ka satellites.

Thanks for your info, too, Earl. I'm thinking about adding HD to a second TV. The easy and cheap way would be to take a lead off one of my R15s and just use one tuner in it.

What I do...

Is I use my WB68 to power my 4 feeds for the Ka/Ku Systems (the two HR20s)

Then I feed 4 of those outputs to my older 4x8 switch array (which has a total of 16 outputs)

So I have 16 3LNB outpus and 4 5LNB outputs.

That should hold me over to the FTM technology is released.

Is cascading the 8 Way switches acceptable?
The setup I have:

Zinwell 6802 (I don't have a WB68 yet).
Fed to 4 splitters. Which splits to 2 4x8 powered switches.

Has worked like a GEM for nearly a year now.

Because the WB68 is not powered, there may be issues if you try to cascade two of them, one off the other. Doing what Earl did, using a powered 4x8 or 5x8 below the WB68 does work fine for the non-MPEG4 feeds.

If you use two WB68's, then the parallel method fed through power passing splitters (on both legs) is the way to go.

Is the reason that I only have a signal of 35ish on the 103 because I have 2 WB68 in parallel? I have had several installers out trying to get a better signal but that is the best they say they can get. By the way 101 is in the 90's 110 in the 80's.

Probably not. 99 and 103 are all spotbeam and I suspect you are seeing transponders with spotbeams pointing at nearby areas rather than your own. Lyngsat doesn't indicate which satellite is used for St. Louis HD locals so it's hard to tell. Do you get any transponders with high levels on 99 (if you have a H20, you might not be able to get a reading, so this isn't necessarily a good test)? Are you receiving your locals?

Yes I get my HD local from St. Louis but I thought they came from 103. I believe there is no signal at all on 99. And on 103 it is only trans. 2,4,6 that work the rest don't work or have zero's

What model of receiver do you have? My H20-600 shows n/a for all transponders on 99, but I still get the locals from there (it's a software issue which hopefully will be fixed soon). I see one channel on 103 at about 51 and suspect it is Portland.

I have 2 HR20's and 1 H20 and they all show the same thing with regards to the 99 sat. transponders1-6 are 0's and the rest are N/A and sat 103 transponders 1-6 are 0,42,0,50,36. I am able to get my St. Louis High def. locals from satellite in MPEG4 so I guess I am suppose to be getting signal from the 103 dish???

So those of us who have 2 WB68's in parallel will have problems next year with new satellites why?

That should not be a problem. It should work properly.
