I have a HR250-10 Tivo and it is giving me problems.I also pay monthly for equipment insurance through Directv. Will they replace it for the newer DVR?

They'd replace it even if it wasn't giving you problems. Call and ask.
Yes, I'd imagine they want to retire those older boxes and provide an HR21 or HR22.

Just make sure you check on what it might do to your contractual obligation. They may want you to eat another two years of contract for it.
I am in the same boat, my HR10-250 just died (disk bad). I got a free HR20 back in the spring to replace the HR10, but I said I wanted to keep the HR10 active in another room, and they said fine.

Since the HR10 is not the primary DVR on the account, and it was already "replaced" for free once, I don't know what my options are on getting another HR2x. Free would be nice (including an AM21, I use OTA), but I don't really know what to expect. And no, don't have insurance. The HR10 is owned however if this makes any difference to the outcome.

Same thing here ( except they have upgraded me twice for free ) , I have insurance but the 10-250 will not die :)
Personally, I’d see about getting it replaced though the PP. It your HR10 is an owned unit, then the HR2x they replace it with will also be owned, and with no commitment extension. If you opt for the (usually) free upgrade, then it will be a leased HR2x, and your commitment *might* not be extended.
