622 went into endless boot cycle yesterday. A replacement unit is on the way. Will I be able to use the current recordings on my EHD with this replacement? The CSR said I would have to reformat but I figured with the household key I should be ok. Thanks much.

Yes. Get your household key from the Counters in the Diag screen. When you activate your new receiver it should receive the same household key for your account. Check it to be sure and you will not have to format the EHD as long as you have the same key.

Do not hook up your EHD until after you verify the household key is the same on the replacement receiver. If it is not call Dish support and have them reset your replacement DVR household key to the old key (write it down before you attempt ther DVR switch).

Which leads to the problem of how do you get to counters if you machine is in an endless boot cycle?

There's a lesson for all of us. Write down your household key!

I actually copied down the household key a while back figuring it might be a good idea. Turns out for once I just might have been correct. :)

Actually if you plug in your USB drive while the receiver has the wrong key it does not do any harm. It will tell you the EHD is used by another receiver and it must be formatted before you can use it. At that point you can cancel out and no harm comes to the drive contents. So, it is safe as long as you read the error messages and don't format the drive.

What if you still have no keys? Both my recievers have been zero since the beginning.
Funny you should bring that up. The original 622 I activated my EHD on also had no key. I didn't get a key until I had to replace my 622 due to a faulty HDMI port. I plugged in my EHD into my replacement 622 and it worked. All my stuff from my old box was there and usable. Upon going into counters I found a household key. Go figure.

Call dish and ask them to send a hit to your receiver to correct the household key.
