I use a Hauppage HDPVR. Records from the receivers component outputs in SD or HD using mpeg4. Can convert to standard DVD or just record file to play back in Hd on your computer.

Just waiting for Video Redo to be able to handle H264 and I'll be one happy camper.

DVD-RAM. Is that still alive
Yes, DVD-RAM is still alive and well. It's not being used for STB recorders much anymore, even though some new units may still support it. Its main use is for data backups. Since standard DVD media records in one singe spiral track and has no error-correction, it's a poor choice for critical data. While lost bits may just cause an inconvenient drop-out on a motion picture, it could render a data file unusable. While DVD-RAM is no more stable than any other DVD format, it records in sectors instead of a single spiral and each sector has parity bits for error correction. That makes it a better choice for backups.
