I got my hands on an older HR-20-100S from a friend (for free) and was wondering if this was still a supported unit on the DTV system. I currently have a 5LNB system.

The HR20 is still used. You will need to call DIRECTV, contact the Access Card Dept and find out if it can be activated on your account. They will need the Receiver ID and you will need to buy a new access card.

You'll need to get a new access card but as long as there's nothing wrong with DVR it will still work.

as long as it wasnt a leased unit that your friend didnt return, it had to be an owned unit, and not have any outstanding charges associated with it. A call to D* and a new access card and you should be in business.
