anyone know what windspeeds (assuming ideal install) a 3lnb dish can withstand. was just asked on the phone and have no idea on it. I ended up advising him if he was concerned about damage to the house to remove the reflecter for now. dude's in the path of gustav right now.

The dish (reflector) and LNB assembly can probably survive some very high winds, but there's more to it than just that. Your friend must also consider how well the dish is mounted to what. Is it on a pole? Attached to the side of his house with lag bolts? Etc., etc. These all must be considered when specifying wind ratings.

If I were in the way of a category 4 storm I think I'd take it down.

I would suggest lowering the mast so that the dish is laying down. When the storm subsides (and assuming that the dish is still there), you can hopefully tip it back up and be good to go without having to reset everything.

In the case of the DIRECTV behemoth dish, its wind rating is entirely dependent on how many "struts" were used to hold it in place. No struts = damage.

never really had much experiance assembling/dissassembling a dish. from looking at my own it doesn't look like the mast would come off short of unbolting it from the house. i told him to mark off where the dish was pointed to make repointing easier.
