Wireless Ethernet Adapter Suggestions

1755 Views 16 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  EMoMoney
I'm ready to go to VOD. I currently use a Linksys WRT54G wireless router in my home network. I want to attach a wireless adapter to my HR-21 box. I get good signal strength where the box is located. Any info on what will give me good results will be appreciated.

There are various threads on wireless bridges in the HR2X section of the forum worth looking at.
As mjones73 suggested, there is a sticky (I think in the DOD section) that walks through setup and suggested bridges that may work.

FWIW, I too have the Linksys WRT54G and first tried a NetGear bridge. Could never get it to talk to the Linksys, it could see the wireless network but it would never talk to it.

So, based on the sticky thread, I tried a Linksys adapter (Linksys WGA600N Wireless Gaming Adapter) and it works fine for me.
I use the Linksys WGA54G game adapter. It works fine, though at one point I had to power cycle one of them - it was losing connection to the Linksys router.

I'm now using them with the Actiontec router that comes with Verizon FIOS and it works fine.
My router is a Wireless N....should i spend the extra money to buy the Wireless N adapter to hook into the dvr for maximum speed...or does the wireless G do fine. What about HD on demand....does that crawl on G or is it fine?
If your primary use of the wireless network is VOD, then Wireless G is enough. It has a bandwidth of 54Mbps, assuming you have a strong signal, which is way more bandwidth than most people's Internet connection, which top out around 6 or 8 Mbps.

If your plans lean more towards viewing video from your PC, you might want more bandwidth.
I can say good things about DIRECTV powerline adapters and the SlingLink Turbo series, and if you're really looking for a wireless solution, I personally enjoy my Linksys WET54G.
If you're handy reading instructions, a cheap G solution is to get a WRT54G for about $45, put dd-wrt on it, and operate it as a client bridge. All five ports (including WAN) can be used as LAN ports.

In fact, put dd-wrt on your router, it adds many features. See www.dd-wrt.com. PM if you have any questions.

This is what I did, actually had this setup before I got my HR-20. I have my dvr, original xbox, and xbox360 hooked to it bridged to another wrt54g in my home office. Works flawlessly.

I have done the same, it works every time.

directv powerline adapters work great
But both ends have to be on the same circuit. That stopped me.

Mine are on different circuits (on the same panel, however).

That isn't true for my slinglink turbo. Both ends do have to be in the same breaker box, but they are definitely not on the same circuit.
Thanks to all for the information. I'm gonna try the dd-wrt software and will probably go with a WRT54G . In the interim I tried setting up my Compaq laptop as a bridge and it works OK.

mine are on different circuits that are on completely different 200 amp panels and they work.
Just get another wireless G router and set it up as a bridge. Best Buy's brand Dynex routers are always $35 and they often go on sale. I got mine for $25. You can probably find one on Craigslist for cheaper than that.
