My installation appointment is less than 24 hours away... and I've been reading about how LA users are getting pretty low signals on 129... It's shocking to me to see how many people (not just in LA) are having issues with 129. What is Dish thinking?

Searching through the threads, it seems those with a 2-dish solution are having better luck at getting strong (though not as strong as they can be) signals from 129.

Those that read one of my previous threads, an installer came out a week ago and said they ran out of Dish 1000's, and offered a 2-dish install which the guy didn't think I would take him up on, and more or less refused to install it when I said go for it.

So now that they have the Dish 1000's back in stock, they are coming out to install it. If I asked, would the installer install 2 Dish 500's instead of one Dish 1000?

I wouldn't necessarily assume you are going to have problems with the Dish 1000. While many people have posted problems with the 1000, there are hundreds out there who have the Dish 1000 up and running in various locations around the country that are having zero problems. While I enjoy this wesite very much, you do tend to read more negative posts then positive.
Let the installers do their job, then judge for yourself if the 1000 is going to work for you.
I live in northern Cal and have no problems with the 1000. I have a brother in law who lives in Orange County, has the 1000, and has no problems.
Good luck with the install...

Thinking about trying to get my bro a system going in SF bay area and need to know if the D 1000 will work well in that area. Have had 2 replies about signal strength of the D1000 in that area 1 said that it work great the other said is awful. How well is it working for you in N Cal?

When I had my install, I had asked for one dish. When the installer came, he said the line-of-sight to one of the satellites (65?) wasn't very good. He suggested two dishes. I went with his suggestion, and have had excellent results.

So, at least in my experience, the installer will do whatever is necessary for your situation, one dish or two.

They did for me, but only after he called Dish to get approval. The installer had never put in ANY high definition or D1000s before so I think he was a little worried when I told him that I had read about a lot of problems with the 1000 and he most likely saw it as the easiest way out for him.

As rsprague suggested I let the installer install what he felt was best, which was the Dish 1000. The reception is OK on the 129... some transponders are a bit low I think... running in the mid 50's. I'll give it a shot and see, and if the low signal becomes a problem, I'll just have Dish send a tech out and either realign or install a new dish.

The installer is never going to have your best interest at heart. If he did he would go broke. ;)

The problem with 129 and the west coast are footprint.
That bird was origionally desighned for a eastern slot. Now that it has been moved to the west the conus beam is not optimized for the west coast.
Midwestern states have good results with 129 and east coast states struggle with LOS because 129 is so low in the sky for the east.

He may not have my best interest at heart, but it's also in his interest to make sure I get a good signal, or else he'd have to make another trip out. So it's better for him to take care of the problem from the beginning.

I asked and made sure he knows that if I have signal problems, I would definitely be calling them to come back out to make it right!

We shall see... rainy season for LA is coming soon!

My installer put a D300 up with the D1000 at my request in Indiana even though the D1000 had acceptable signal. I told him I needed it for 61.5 and he was okay with it.
