I had an AT9 dish installed earlier this year, we put it on a large diameter pole in my backyard. Question - the installer sunk the metal pole (had metal fins, too) in the S. Fl. sand, and told me it was not necessary to pour concrete around it. (he also "buried" the cables under a 1" dusting of sand). While the dish has stayed in place remarkably well all year, I still wonder if it should have been set in concrete. Anyone here familiar with the big 5lnb dish installs in S. Florida sand ? I need to dig around the pole to bury and protect the exposed cables from mowers and string trimmers, so I was wondering if I should also pour a bag of Quikrete in there while I was at it.....

Thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with the process, or the S FL sand for that matter, but if you are going to do anything like that one critical piece to keep in mind is that the pole needs to be absolutely plumb. There should be a bubble-level dealie in the mast where the bubble should be dead center. If not, you will have alignment problems.

For as cheap as quickrete is, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a bag or two in the hole.

There is no question of it being plumb, the only question is, do I need to dump quikrete in it. Sugar sand in S. FL is a funny thing - a cement base does not always help, so I was hoping someone would know for certain. If I do end up doing this, I'll have to come up with some method of securing the post while I dig away at the base. That doesn't sound fun, as it is perfectly aligned now.

Does anyone here know why DirecTV and Dishnetwork still use the Old big 36 Inch dish for their Intertnational?

Why cant they just use the 18 Inch:confused: ?

At Least does not look that ugly, cheaper and easier to install

The poles with fins are designed to be driven into the ground with a post driver without the use of concrete. How do they work in sand? I don't know. It wouldn't hurt to use some quickrete on it for some peace of mind.
