I was going to drop a premium channel or two earlier today. I logged into my account and when I tried to drop Cinemax the system told me that I have to call DTV in order to drop it. When did they start doing that? I could have sworn I used to be able to drop and add premiums at will through my on line account. Is DTV that desperate to make money?

When you call, the csr will most likely offer you a credit as an incentive to keep the premiums.
That didn't happen a year or so ago when I dropped HBO. Not quite "OK Done" when I said the first season of Boardwalk Empire had ended as my reason, but pretty painless to complete the transaction.

Please, Mr. Orc, they aren't out to get you. Given the fervor you assign to the other points you don't like, I do hope you can relax around this one! It's only TV! :)

It's far easier to go online and make a change (and get an offer online) rather than

pick up the phone
wait in queue
explain the issue
listen to an offer
saying no
get transferred
explain the issue again
get another offer
then make a final decision.

PITA.

I'm all for venting and constructive criticism but it sounds like directv is not for the OP.

I've had directv for over 14 years and not had any of these issues.

Seems kinda pointless to complain about all the connections to the receiver. Do you also complain about all the connections to a pc?

The technology used for directv is amazing. I live in an apartment and only have to have one cable come in for my 2 receivers.
Good luck

Michael.

Just a general statement...not just limited to Directv. I've always thought if you can sign up for something online you should be able to cancel it as well. Too many businesses make it easy to sign up for something but make you jump through all kinds of hoops to cancel. Just a pet peeve of mine.

I canceled all the premiums last summer to save about 50 bucks a month. I called and told the CSR to cancel them. She offer me a credit to keep them, I said no thanks and that was it. No muss, no fuss and no pain. I was on the phone for a total of about three minutes. I wish my phone company was the efficient.

It might have been that you weren't secretly looking to argue! You were clear in what you wanted, and as you said, no muss, no fuss. Way to go!

It was not like this since the site launched, but for a long time now. I do remember being able to add, drop or switch premiums at will through the site.

Didn't the ability to add then delete premiums online contribute to the creation of the $10 charge if you drop a premium during the first month? I seem to recall that some people were activating a premium for a weekend, for example, then dropping it on Monday and were only being charged for a couple of days. DirecTV instituted the minimum charge to discourage short subscriptions.

it works.

I have wanted to drop to the next lower package for a couple months (i'm getting the top tier). but it says I have to call to downgrade, and I'm far too lazy to do so.

Its funny, but it does work.
That's odd. I was able to downgrade to a less expensive package, online, about 2 years ago. I went from Premier to Choice Xtra+HD DVR without the hassle of having to speak with anyone!

I wouldn't say they make you jump through hoops. When I dropped from Choice Premiere to Choice Ultimate the CSR did ask me why I wanted to change but she wasn't a pest about it.
I agree though that if you can add premiums on-line & upgrade to choice premiere on-line then you should be able to drop premiums and downgrade from Choice Premiere on-line.
Oh well...

I've been thinking of doing that too.Maybe I'll finally reinstate my NetFlix subscription.
