Zoom Modes with HDMI

I have a Samsung DLP TV connected to an HR10-250 via HDMI. My question is why are the Zoom, Panorama modes grayed out with only 16:9 and 4:9 modes available? This is irritating when watching SD letterboxed programs like Battlestar Galactica where the Zoom mode would work great. Is there a technical reason those options are not available with HDMI?

On my Philips LCD HD, the stretch/zoom functions are disabled with the HDMI/DVI connection, but they
were enabled with previous component connects. I use the stretch/zoom features on my SA HD DVR stb.
I also have the HR20-700 which has the crop (zoom) feature which works well, unfortunately the HR10 doesn't have this mode. Oh well, I'm going to replace the HR10 as soon as the HR20's are available again. Or I suppose I could hook up the component video connection.
