From the multiple articles I've read, CBS offered to allow their channels on DIRECTV while negotiating after the contract expired. DIRECTV said 'no'.

Any word on negotiations? The fact that I haven't heard anything is discouraging. I fear this is going to be a long blackout. AT&T is playing hardball. They are really the worst. I am one step closer to ditching DirecTV and seeing what Optimum has if this goes on into the middle of August. Luckily I have the locals package with them now along with internet and Locast unsurprisingly showed up Saturday when the blackout hit.

They should play hardball. They're asking for a fortune for OTA channels.
You can switch providers if you want, but what happens when one of your favorites gets blacked out there?

Funny you bring up Optima today. We were visiting my mother-in-law Friday-Saturday near NYC - she has an Altice box (one TV). We were watching something and I missed what an actor said so I hit the rewind button on the Optimum remote and it didn't work. I looked through the setup menu on her box after seeing that most other buttons on the remote were working.
Then I went to the Optimum website only to find out they charge $16.99 plus tax for the privilege of basically 'trick play'. Gotta make up some of what 'YES' is charging them, I guess.
Since I can’t use a LCC with my Genie 2 I will give this to mid to late August before considering supplementing something else like Hulu or YTTV

If CBS is still blacked out in NY by week 1 of the NFL, will Jets fans be able to watch the games on Sunday Ticket? I believe in the past your local teams are blacked out on the Ticket but I could be wrong.

No, and that's why AT&T will have to make a deal by then regardless. You can't have Sunday Ticket's exclusive provider missing home games in many of the league's biggest markets...
Well to me the product has to have 'value", if DIRECTV agrees to terms of content providers and the cost is too high for us consumers than I have to go down to a package I can afford, look for something else or quit watching TV all together.
If CBS and others wont agree to DIRECTV terms to keep costs down and they leave the service and the only alternative is to sign on to CBS all access or whatever other providers are called than they need to have value, CBS all access doesn't have enough value for me so I wont be watching their shows and advertising.

Anybody know when the ESPN contract is up? I hope AT%T plays hardball when it comes time to renew. It really frustrates me that almost 10% of my base package rate (choice xtra classic) is for all the ESPN channels which I hardly ever watch and wouldn't miss at all if they were gone.

That's not going to change. Whenever it is that they renew with Disney for Disney/ABC/ESPN channels the only dispute will be by HOW MUCH they are raising their rates, there isn't any question of keeping them steady let alone reducing them.

I hadn't checked earlier, but just checked and CBS DNS E 390 & W 391 are live. Since the news was on CBS E, there was a station logo and can confirm that CBS CUSA 9 Washington D.C. is broadcasting, and that CBS W is broadcasting James Corden, but I don't know which west coast affiliate DTV switched to. I've had all of the E & W DNS stations since 1994, and can't recall an instance when any of the E or W DNS stations were pulled, much less both simultaneously, even back when each of the stations broadcast were spread across the U.S., rather than all NY and LA. I guess this answers the question "what does DTV do if any of the NY and / or LA stations have carriage disputes." Looks like DTV will plug in another local.
[Edit] I haven't confirmed but another post indicated the CBS DNS W feed is the San Diego KFMB 8 affiliate.
It's up in August on UVerse and the working theory is that AT&T attempts to bundle new contracts across UVerse, Directv and DirectvNow services whenever possible. Directv's last contract, which saw an extension sans a blackout, expired in December 2014. Also keep in mind that Directv is one of the few providers who announced that they would carry the ACC Network at launch next month, so relations seem okay.

With the CBS blackout can I use this as a reason to get the early termination fee waived when I cancel DirecTV? I have about 15 months left on contract (we upgraded equipment last Fall) but we are moving and deciding to switch to Xfinity when we move.

Channel lineup is subject to change per contract ... so no, you can't get out of your contract due to channel disputes.
