What has happened in the past, what our individual life experiences are, certainly helps form the person we are and the personality we have. That in turn affects how we perceive and interact with our current environment. It is no surprise that each generation perceives the world around them differently than other generations. Each generation needs to understand this, and respect other generations and how they see the world around them. This is not easy, either direction (young understanding old, or old understanding young). But the old do have the advantage of having been young, while the young have yet to experience being old.
I'm long ago retired Army, Nam era vet, and while that certainly has no direct relationship to advertising on various platforms, it can't help but be part of how I perceive the world around me today. And for the record, I hate the DirecTV advertising during pause - but it is easily solved, just disconnect your DirecTV equipment from the internet.
