Spectrum DVR Alternatives

HOA dues pay for Spectrum cable and internet so I'm locked in. Good channel array, good pricing and good bandwidth so no complaints there. Need a DVR solution though. Spectrum DVR seems lousy, very low capacity, $30/month and that's only for 1 TV with no "whole home" type option.

Looking for the best DVR recommendation to cover 2-3 TV's to be used with Spectrum cable TV. Assuming it's going to be some TiVO combination? I guess the crappy Spectrum system + an external hard drive is also an option if I only care about 1 TV?

Comments & suggestions on what hardware I should run with (and recurring costs) from those more knowledgeable will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Spectrum allows you to get their channels via a app on the roku, basically turns it into cable box, you might want to try that with their cloud DVR, just sign in with your Spectrum id and password.
Assuming the HOA contract provides for these things. They're often not a whole lot like the civilian products.

On the topic of TiVo as an alternative, Spectrum starting notifying customers in July that they were going to walk away from TiVo in some fashion. I'd be asking the neighbors what they're doing and whether it is on its way out.

I have moved from cable to fiber but I used to use a cable box from hdhomerun to distribute to whole house. It does require a cablecard.
Given that cable companies can walk away from CableCARD now, I'd be more than a little concerned about any solution that involves CableCARD. In accordance with a 2020 FCC ruling, they have to provide an alternative security device but it no longer needs to be CableCARD.

The article doesn't directly address CableCARD on non-TiVo devices but it certainly doesn't provide any assurance that they'll be an option going forward.

It didn't appear to help enough consumers to be worth the effort. Of all of the CableCARD devices deployed, well over 90% of them were cable company owned receivers so they've paid a pretty hefty price too.

The same issue is now coming to wireless phones where the SIMs are becoming virtual.

Not getting charged a lease fee was often partially offset by having to pay for a device subscription to TiVo or for guide service on some other system.

Thanks for all of the great chat. I really appreciate it. Recall I am "stuck" with Spectrum as noted i my original post. I thought the least I could do is the you know how I proceeded. TiVO did not sound like the way to go.

I was not even aware it was available but Spectrum has an upgraded cloud based DVR (called cloud DVR+). The streaming on their App has been very good (I have two cable boxes and two TV's that are streaming only). Their crappy hardware DVR's only stored a very limited amount of programs and cost almost $30/month. The cloud based DVR+ costs $10/month, can record any channel in your package and has no size limitation. The only limitation I am aware is a max. total of 100 recordings stored at any one time and you can record up to 100 shows at a time. Does not matter if they are SD, HD, 30mins long, 2 hour movies or 3 hour live events. All will stay recorded until you hit 100. It is in effect a whole home system. As long as the app works on your TV (and it does on most smart TV's built in 2017 or after) you can watch your recorded shows on any TV or device that has connectivity. So, I can watch recorded shows on any TV in my house or on my tablet or phone while mobile. Unlimited number of simultaneous playbacks on your home network and up to 3 when remote.

Hope this might help someone else one day.

That is the one good thing about Charter/Spectrum, Comcast also, they both allow you to access the programming on a app via a Roku at no charge.

The only bad thing is those damn fees, Broadcast, Sports, DVR and then those other fees just because you are their customer
