The Dolby Digital setting in the HR24 should be ON.
The settings in your AVR are what you need to change after changing the DD to ON.
There are usually several types of sounds you can choose in the AVR.
If this is a new setup you also have to choose what speakers are hooked up to the AVR in the setup.

 

Thanks for the response.i did try every setting on the AVR and no luck. The genie and the PS4 work fine.

 

I am looking at the manual ( very expensive machine ) and it has several HDMI inputs. Have you tried running the HDMI from the HR24 and then from the AVR to the TV ?
You should have the ability to set up the HDMI input to take advantage of the sounds you want.

I have an HR24-100 using optical cable from it to my Yamaha and it does the full DD5.1 surround sound. My son has an H21 running an HDMI to his higher model Yamaha and from there to the TV. He is doing 7.2 surround sound.

I have projector no tv which is also connected to the receiver . I think that there is a problem with the receiver.

 

Try the HDMI from the HR24 to the AVR and then HDMI from the AVR to the Projector.

 

Is this a new AVR? have you used this AVR with another DIRECTV receiver before? Did it work?

Do you have another DIRECTV receiver that you can try with this AVR? it can be any HD receiver, it doesn't have to be a DVR

I've run across kind of the same issue. Using the optical input on the AVR. Sometimes changing the channel will set the AVR to stereo (2 speakers), not 5.1. Toggling Dolby Digital on & off on the HR54 is the only fix I've found, changing channels doesn't do it. My guess is some sort of delay bug with the HR54 at times?

Unplug all the outputs (TV, projector etc) from the AVR and see if it thinks it is receiving DD from the Hr24. Also check you are using an input on the AVR that is set to "auto"

 

If this problem is caused by the 24-100, I will be surprised. I've never had a problem with sound from any of my very many HRs. Of course any HR that ends in 100...well, I wouldn't be all that surprised.

I will be surprised also if it's the Hr24. I suspect it's an HDMI control issue. I spent three weeks last year chasing a similar problem; discovered if the AVR is set to passthru, and the output was set to TV, audio was only two channel stereo

 

With the Sony-JS8500 TV set mismatch I've been driven near crazy with problems, but none like the TS's.

Well Im Back again.
Im using a 1x4 HDMI splitter on my Directv DVR HR24-200 output and it will not give me 5.1 audio once i go into the Pioneer SC-95 receiver. If i go direct from the DVR to the Receiver i get 5.1. does anyone have a brand of HDMI splitter that is working for them or any ideas how to get mine to work?

 

I unplugged the splitter and all HDMI cables for 5 minutes and then plugged in the power then one HDMI cord at a time and it works great now!!

 

HDMI Splitters have all kinds of odd behaviors in terms of the edid handling. Some have fixed edid, some pass through from one of the attached devices, some prefer a particular port, some "merge" properties from all connected devices. Really nice ones have configuration settings (switches) to let you control the edid.

I used this app on my PC to research/test splitter behavior:

I've tried three different splitters and there was no consistency between any of them, and am still shopping for a better solution.

Does anyone know what formats of surround sound are supported by DirecTV, particularly with the new 4k support? Is it always Dolby (never DTS?) The C61K is labeled Dolby Digital Plus, which is a 7.1 format. I'm guessing most content is Dolby Digital 5.1 ?

And to complicate things, apparently optical/coax audio interfaces may not support 7.1 audio, and if you connect your HDMI directly to TV expecting the best audio to pass through, it may get downgraded (again, seems to be related to the edid information)

The Optical cable does top out at DD 5.1.
I bought a new Samsung 4k TV just before Thanksgiving and have an HDMI running from my HR24 to the TV and do not have any problems with the sound. I have turned Dolby Digital off and on in the HR24 and both choices play.
I can't run the HDMI to thru my AVR because it is too old and does not have HDMI connections.
I know nothing of the other things you discuss.

DIRECTV supports DD5.1 on all of their HD receivers, and some SD equipment supports DD5.1 as well. 4K Supports Atmos via HDMI and of of course DD5.1 via the known interfaces.

Of course supports means that the receivers are capable of decoding the signals., availability is something else.
