Pac-12 Networks confident, even without DirecTV

For fans who root for Pac-12 teams but watch their television via DirecTV, it's always a good news, bad news scenario when talking Pac-12 Networks.

The good news, as the Networks' new president Lydia Murphy-Stephans proudly notes, is that their first year, by their own standards, has been a rousing success. Launched in August, the Pac-12 Networks broadcast 550 live events in addition to more than 200 hours of original programming. In its second year, they plan to carry 750 live events.

So, that's the good news. The bad news, if you're a DirecTV subscriber: you still probably won't be able to watch any of it.

Murphy-Stephans, who was promoted from her position as executive vice president and general manager when then-president Gary Stevenson resigned in April, called it "a disappointment" that negotiations between the Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV haven't progressed.

Not having DirecTV is a massive drag on PAC12N.
But it's not the only problem. It's not even the biggest problem.

Scott completely whiffed on the importance of a network partner.

The SEC and ACC are thriving because of ESPN.
The SEC gets an additional bump from the best CFB window on TV - 3:30 Eastern on CBS for the next few years.
The Big 10 thrives because of FOX and ESPN.
The Big 12 may not thrive, but they are helped by their relationship with both FOX and ESPN.

And the PAC12 fizzles because the 2 CFB powerhouse networks are too busy promoting their own to give a rip about them.

Worse, television drives recruiting. Look at all the southern California talent fleeing the state.

This lack of exposure / lack of recruiting spiral is deadly.

Adding DirecTV might bandage the wound in the short term, but if ESPN and FOX don't care for you, the prognosis is terminal.

By the time OTT offerings kill off traditional cable, it will be far to late to resuscitate the PAC12.

Actually they do have deals with FOX and espn for many (vast majority of football games there have any meaning) games already. The problem is they aren't letting either of those companies run the channels to use their leverage to get deals with providers.

AT&T had a history of paying more (14% more on average) than DIRECTV for the channels they carried on Uverse. I am surprised that they were given an out. I was not surprised that AT&T let the contract expire.

I can't find any reference to a successful renewal. Maybe a small cable system somewhere?
I believe the major players are under their original "long term" launch contracts.

I can’t recall when but I believe several outlets have reduced their carriage agreements over the years. I think they where mostly out of market providers shrinking to just the main channel instead of all or something like that.
