hdr is not working for me, says not compatible but the 4k content I have saved looks fine to me
Thanks for replying. Seems like it’s an issue with the software/firmware. Wondering if the box is even capable of HLG HDR. This would be downgrade for me if it can’t do HDR. Anyone receive the -500 box?

you are a genius. after receiving a 3rd box and having no luck, I followed your instructions; signed up for a free trial, logged into DirecTV stream, factory reset, and when it rebooted it connected to my hs17.
So, it would be minimal set of steps, making the STB as a Gemini, eg as a client for HS17. Correct ?

After reading a number of these posts. Looks like only rolling these new box’s out to select markets instead of a full national roll out was the right choice.

It usually is.

I would point out that we don't hear much about issues with the hardware or its functionality (usually due to some level of NDA as is commonplace in testing programs).

What we're hearing about are people who are peeved/angry/upset/annoyed about not being included in the test group and the test administration's apparent inability to insure that the appropriate firmware has been applied to the device before shipment. Surely neither of these issues should reflect on the Gemini itself.

Received a postcard offering a "No cost Gemini upgrade" here in metro Atlanta, so called in to the number specified (800-578-4388) to see about the upgrade. Current system is a Genie 2 (HS-17) server with 2 C61K and 2 C61W (for a total of 4 Genie minis). Was told the offer is only for ONE of those Genie Minis to be upgraded for free. Not what I expected - is everyone getting this same offer or are they upgrading all of your minis?
I called yesterday and was offered 4 which she said is the maximum allowable. They will arrive tomorrow.

I have heard that the roll out of the Gemini is limited at this point, and one person suggested it was "premature", i.e. not quite ready for prime time. Don't get rid of your existing mini's until you've had a couple of weeks experience with the new devices. You may well have no problems (and I hope that is the case). Do let us know what you think of them once you have them.

I've seen very little commentary on the operation and utility of the Gemini but most has been relatively glowing. Any complaints about readiness seem to be more about the testing program sending un-flashed hardware and their dedicated Gemini support personnel being blindsided rather than the Gemini device itself.

I would say not being able to do HLG HDR is a major issue and a downgrade from the previous 4k genie mini which has had HDR available since 2017. Hopefully they get this fixed in a future update. But I don’t even know if the box is capable of HLG.

I tried using YouTubeTV on the Gemini and played a previous NBAtv 4k game which I know had HLG on other devices. It still played in HDR..but no HLG. Also some 4k broadcasts such as fox 4k or NBAtv4k didn’t play in full 4k resolution or give the option to select 4k but it did show hdr. But it give 4k as an option for espn4k. So I’m starting to think this box is not capable of HLG. On top of that, HDR is turned on for everything. The settings menu still says HDR doesn’t work on my tv even though I know it does.

I was really excited about this box but so far there aren’t many benefits. It looks sleeker. The remote is nicer. And voice control is a nice feature but isn’t fully functional yet compared to voice control for YouTubeTV on a google home max.

Not having HLG on directv4k sucks. The number keypad on the remote is hard to use as well. Also the 5 second rewind and 30 second ffwd buttons are harder to use bc there’s no dedicated button for it (it’s just the left or right button now so it doesn’t always work if those directional buttons are needed for something else).
